CEA-Leti: five startups created in 2022


2022 was a prolific year at CEA-Leti. The institution supported the creation of five startups, two in healthcare and the rest in quantum computing, LIDAR and water quality. Let’s take quick look at their technology and potential markets.

Admir: speeding up biochemical analysis by a factor of 100

Without the need for reactive, coloring or biomarker agents, Admir takes less than a minute to analyze tissue or cell samples, in particular for cancer diagnostics. This technology works in combination with an ultra-fast, spectroscopic imagery system that provides a wide field of vision in the mid-infrared range as well as software that builds on machine learning algorithms. In time, this solution could speed up biochemical analysis by a factor of 100 all the while ensuring that results are more reliable.

Admir’s potential markets include both public and private laboratories and hospitals, all of which face increasing demands for rapid, yet complex bioanalysis solutions.


Siquance: a semiconductor-based quantum computer

Siquance aims to develop a quantum computer based on microelectronics technology. The startup is building on 20 years of research at CEA and CNRS. The two institutions provided the startup with licenses for 40 patents. The company’s work currently focuses on quantum bits, or qubits. 

The goal is to produce qubits using existing microelectronics silicon manufacturing processes in order to increase volume and reduce costs. This is the major difference between Siquance and its competitors, all of whom are betting on technology that does not currently exist on any industrial production line.

Thanks to their enormous computing power, quantum computers will impact all markets: healthcare, engineering, finance, meteorology, etc.



Diamsens: tracking water quality using a diamond nanocrystal sensor

Diamsens is creating a new generation of sensors to track water quality. This global market is valued at 1 billion euros and is increasing by 8% every year. The startup’s technology offers a more accurate solution as compared to existing offers. This new system requires little maintenance and lasts much longer as well. The sensor’s detection surface is composed of synthetic diamond nanocrystals, which are produced using a rapid manufacturing process that has relatively low energy consumption.

The startup is currently aiming to enter markets for public and private swimming pools as well as water treatment facilities. The technology could also be interesting to track water quality for agriculture, aquaculture and animal husbandry activities.


Steerlight: LIDAR for mobile robotics and autonomous vehicles 

Steerlight is developing a long-range LIDAR solution that is both three to four times smaller than existing solutions and more cost efficient. The key to this success can be found in the integration of silicon photonic circuits that are produced using standard industrial processes. 

This LIDAR solution operates at 1550nm, which makes it 40 times more powerful than impulse-based LIDAR while guaranteeing eye safety. The system provides information about distance and relative speed. It is also less prone to glare issues.

Steerlight will first enter the mobile robotics market for industrial, logistics and service companies. A second generation of this technology will be aimed at urban mobility and autonomous transportation markets.



BAIO-DX: rapid analysis of bacteria

BAIO-DX accelerates the analysis of biological samples that might contain bacterial infections. The process eliminates the need to wait for the end of a Petri dish culture. Thanks to holographic, lens-free imagery and AI algorithms, this technology offers continuous sample observation in order to detect bacteria as soon as they develop and identify them without needing to extract a sample. The system then carries out an antibiogram in order to determine the best course of antibiotic treatment.

This technology increases laboratory productivity and facilitates patient care by improving the speed and accuracy of antibiotic treatment. BAIO-DX also helps combat antibiotic resistance by reducing the prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics.
