CEA-Leti Announces Visionary 6G Initiative across the UE Scientific Community to Foster the Next-Generation Wireless Connectivity

NEW-6G Initiative Will 'Rethink' Nanotech, Draw Roadmaps, Encourage Cooperation And Foster the Emergence of Innovative Ideas for Future 6G Technologies

Published on 25 February 2021

GRENOBLE, France – Feb 25th, 2021 – CEA-Leti today announced the creation of a new European Union initiative to lay the groundwork for future wireless networks with a broad-based approach that converges multiple technologies, fields and disciplines.

  • Called NEW-6G, which stands for nanoelectronics & wireless for 6G, the industrial, research-institute and academic collaboration will evaluate how nanotechnology, telecommunications, hardware, software, networks and equipment can be leveraged to meet 6G-performance and quality-of-service standards,  while meeting societal expectations and sustainability requirements.

  • NEW-6G will offer unprecedented opportunities to rethink the role of nanoelectronics and to establish roadmaps, encourage cooperation, share knowledge and promote the emergence of innovative ideas, said Emilio Calvanese-Strinati, 6G future wireless research director at CEA-Leti.

With an eye toward adapting and exploiting leading-edge R&D already underway at consortium partners, the NEW-6G initiative anticipates creating common projects to pursue further work in the following areas, among others:

  • Network architecture and optimization, protocols and data flows,
  • Security of information and infrastructures,
  • Integrated circuits, digital components, high-performance radio frequencies and low energy consumption,
  • Efficient, integrated antenna solutions, and
  • Dedicated, high-performance, sustainable semiconductor technologies.

Officially launched in January 2021, the NEW-6G initiative will be piloted by CEA-Leti, working closely with a strong consortium of European partners. The NEW-6G initiative accounts for many industrial, vertical markets and academic leading partners from  Europe.
